Young Children’s Community

18 months - 2.6 years

The young children community provides a home like environment which supports the young toddler in all areas of development. The children explore activities and concepts which support their language, cognitive and social development.

Practical Life

Practical Life activities aid in the development of practical skills, fine motor control, concentration and hand-eye coordination. Practical Life includes activities which are relevant to the children’s culture, time and place.

The children explore a variety of practical life activities:

  • Food Preparation - chopping, cutting, slicing, grating, mashing, scooping, stirring, peeling, kneading bread

  • Care of Self - washing hands, changing clothes, washing face, brushing hair, cleaning shoes

  • Care of the Environment - washing clothes, washing dishes, wiping & drying table, sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning a window, polishing wood

  • Care of Plants - watering plants, washing leaves, dusting plants, flower arranging, seed germination

  • Matching pictures to real objects

Self Expression

At Kingston Montessori we value each child’s inner need to self express. The children have creative freedom within the environment to express themselves through a variety of sensory rich activities.

The children explore activities such as:

  • Music

  • Movement

  • Art

Toileting

Toileting is a huge part of the young children’s community programming. At Kingston Montessori we assist the children and the families on their toilet independence journey. Children have a natural readiness to gain toilet independence much younger than what we think. Young children want to be independent and are capable of starting the toilet learning process as early as infancy.

We assist the children on their toilet independence journey through:

  • Highly trained adults who are knowledgeable of the natural toileting process

  • Individual cubbies for each child to store their extra clothing and toileting supplies

  • Washrooms which are equipped with child sized sinks, toilets and equipment to assist with the toileting process

Independence

At Kingston Montessori we place a large emphasis on independence and allowing children to complete tasks and activities with minimal assistance. The Montessori motto is ‘help me to do it myself’. The goal is to guide the child towards independence through the prepared adult and environment.

“Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.”
